Action Alert:
Cliffside Citizen’s Complaints.

Who owns the air? Who owns the atmosphere? Is it Duke Energy? Or are the air and atmosphere part of our common wealth, to be protected as necessary to the public health, welfare, and safe future of our children?

Join concerned citizens in expressing their commitment to democracy. Duke’s Cliffside power plant will certainly accelerate global warming and poison our children’s brains and lungs. Speak out to the NC Utilities Commission to revoke Duke Energy’s permit to build Cliffside. General Information & Resources available here. Write a personal citizens complaint here.

BREAKING NEWS
:
Climate Expert Says Energy Chiefs Have Stolen Big Tobacco’s Playbook. New Study by Jim Hansen says carbon levels are already too high, and in a letter to Duke Energy's Jim Rogers Dr. Hansen, in a plea for cooperation and leadership, urges Rogers to cancel coal-fired power plants and help avoid disaster. Read the letter, press release, and study.

Please join our efforts to stop the expansion of an unnecessary new coal fired power plant by Duke Energy in North Carolina! Coal is polluting and causes global warming. The Cliffside coal plant expansion is an irresponsible option given the climate crisis our planet faces.

Duke Energy is using ratepayer financing to perpetuate global warming, mercury poisoning, air pollution, and mountain top removal mining.

About the Cliffside Power Plant

The Cliffside Power Plant is located in Rutherford County, NC. It is the proposed site of a new 800-megawatt coal-fired facility to be built by Duke Energy at their existing site location. Five older coal boilers currently exist at Cliffside and these wil be retired and upgraded with the addition of the new units to expand generation capacity.

Why is it bad?

The new proposed coal plant would use conventional, pulverized coal technology. This facility would have NO ability to capture or control carbon, which means all of these emissions will pump freely into our already warming atmosphere for at least the next 50 years. The new 800 MW coal-fired facility that would emit over 6 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. We expect a facility of this size will live at least the average of a 50-year lifespan, which means a total of 312 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere throughout its life. This grand total is equal to adding one million cars to the road each year!

Coal for electrons is an immoral and destructive practice say reigious leaders.

What can I do?
  • Your support and involvement in these efforts is critical and urgently needed. The Division of Air Quality recently issued the air permit for this plant and Duke Energy broke ground on the construction site March 26, 2008. WE NEED YOUR VOICE TO HELP STOP THIS PLANT!

climate_code_red_copy.jpgClimate Code Red: the case for sustainable emergency comprehensively covers the most recent climate change science, including the "falling off the cliff" loss of summer artic sea ice in the fall of 2007. It presents the most compelling case for eliminating all coal fired power stations. Temperature and greenhouse gas targets need to be set at levels the will actually provide a solution to global warming and not at levels considered to be "politically feasible." James Hansen warns that we must not only eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, but eventually remove CO2 from the atmosphere in order to cool the planet. A must read for all who wish to understand the science and solutions.
